Mastering Multilingual Online Meetings: 5 golden rules
Seamless Multilingual Collaboration in the Digital Age
The pandemic has transformed global communication. With professional remote interpreting (RSI), international collaboration remains effective while reducing travel costs and environmental impact.
ISO 20108/20109 standards require: – 125–15,000 Hz frequency range – Ultra-low latency audio (<150 ms delay) – HD video feed with speaker visibility
5 Golden Rules for Success
1. Stable Connection
– Always use Ethernet cables.
2. Professional Setup for each participant
– Each person who will be taking the floor needs a quiet environment and a good USB microphone & earbuds (or a good headset). Just using your laptop microphone will not provide the quality output simultaneous interpreters need to do their job properly. Neither will smartphone accessories.
You will find that a good quality microphone does not have to be very expensive.
3. Platform Selection
– Make sure the platform you are planning to use is adequate for simultaneous interpreting (Zoom or RSI platform). Ask your interpreters for advice and test with them in advance.
4. Preparation
– Organize a mandatory tech rehearsal and sound check for all speakers. Interpreters need perfect sound, please make sure all speakers have professional microphones and a cabled broadband internet connection (wifi is less reliable). You might also want to explain to each person how to choose the right audio setup if you find there is something wrong with their sound.
5. Moderation
– You will need an experienced moderator to keep in contact with interpreters and speakers for troubleshooting in case someone’s connection or equipment fails.
